Echocardiogram testing for DVLA

Further to the previous alert in November 2009 as shown below: “RE: CHANGES TO DRIVING STANDARDS – Following the meeting of the Secretary of State for Transport’s Honorary Medical Advisory Panel on Driving and Disorders of the Cardiovascular System held on 17 September 2009.

The following amendments to the standards in the DVLA Exercise Tolerance Test protocol for Group 2 Entitlement (VOC – LGV/PCV) for licence holders/applicants.

Should Atrial Fibrillation develop de novo during Exercise Testing, provided the individual meets all the DVLA Exercise Tolerance Test criteria, the individual will be required to undergo an Echocardiogram and meet the licensing criteria, just as any individual with pre-existing Atrial Fibrillation.”

Please be aware that unless additionally requested, the Echocardiogram should only be conducted if the individual develops Atrial Fibrillation during the Exercise Tolerance Test procedure. If no Atrial Fibrillation is noted then the Echocardiogram is not required. If the Echocardiogram is completed when no Atrial Fibrillation is detected then the DVLA will not be liable to pay the costs of the procedure.
